In 2016, in Victoria, BC. Canada, Donald Kreye and his daughters, Sarah and Zoe, worked in partnership with the Vancouver Island School of Art to establish the Bonnie McComb Kreye Studio Residency in memory of their late wife and mother, Bonnie McComb Kreye. Bonnie was an artist and educator who devoted her life to making art and to encouraging the creative talents of all those she came in contact with. She understood the power of art to change lives and to enrich society. The residency has collaborated in recent years with VISA, Victoria Arts Council Gallery, and the Ministry of Casual Living to offer shows and other opportunities to artists. We will again, as we did In 2021 and 2022, with the funding from the BC Arts Council, partner with The Fifty-Fifty Arts Collective to offer solo shows to several residents.
Residents have the use of a private garden studio for 2 months or 1 month (with accommodation). The residency is open to artists working in all media and across disciplines, and in all stages of their careers. If you are a former resident, we ask that you not reapply for at least 5 years after your initial residency.
Studio: Residents will have the use a 30 square metre studio space in a private, self-contained garden building with a washroom, worktables, and a kitchenette. All lighting, heat, water, insurance costs are included. The studio is walking distance to UVic, buses, grocery stores, cafés, forest and beach. The fall and winter residencies do not include housing but suggestions can be provided regarding accommodation in Victoria. The June through August residencies will include free accommodation. All travel costs must be covered by the artist.
Residency Dates for 2023: (2024 dates will be similar but have yet to be finalized)
January through February: studio only. This residency will be selected in collaboration with THE FIFTY/FIFTY ARTS COLLECTIVE in Victoria and will include a solo show at the gallery in March, 2023. Note: Open to BC residents only
March through April: studio only. This residency will be selected in collaboration with THE FIFTY/FIFTY ARTS COLLECTIVE in Victoria and will include a solo show at the gallery in May, 2023. Note: Open to BC residents only
May: studio only. This residency will be selected in collaboration with THE FIFTY/FIFTY ARTS COLLECTIVE in Victoria and will include a solo show at the gallery in June, 2023. Note: Open to BC residents only
June: studio and accommodation
July: studio and accommodation

September through October: studio only.
November through December: studio only.
Application Deadline : We will keep you posted.
Accommodation: during the June through August residencies accommodation is provided for the solo artist in a 32 square meter fully furnished bachelor apartment on the property. We can make an effort to accommodate the artist’s partner or family but there may not necessarily be space, so please make a note of this on your application.
Cost: There is no charge to residents for the studio residency.
